Advancements in Turret Press Technology

The turret press has long been a staple of sheet metal fabrication, but today’s models are light years ahead of the mechanical and hydraulic systems of the past. Muratec USA has led the charge in evolving turret press technology, combining precision punching with user-friendly controls, energy efficiency, and integration capabilities that drive measurable results.

Muratec turret presses feature all-electric servo motors that offer superior control and reliability compared to older hydraulic systems. Servo drives provide consistent punching force with minimal energy loss, and allow for faster stroke speeds, variable hit depths, and quieter operation. The result? More parts per hour, less wear on tooling, and a cleaner, safer working environment.

Muratec USA is unique in its breadth of offerings for sheet metal fabrication, from its 20-ton turret press machines to the 50-ton M5000. “We’re the only one with a 50-ton turret,” said Muratec USA Regional Sales Manager Steven Goldboss.

Tooling Versatility and Quick-Change Capabilities

Time is money in fabrication, and Muratec turret presses are engineered for fast setup and changeover. Our turret designs feature:

  • High tooling capacity to reduce changeouts
  • Multi-tool stations for maximum flexibility
  • Quick-release clamps and auto-indexing capabilities

With a properly configured turret, operators can complete high-mix part runs without ever needing to stop production to retool.

Superior Part Quality and Consistency

Precision is built into every Muratec turret press. From part alignment and punch repeatability to automated sheet repositioning, our machines consistently deliver tight tolerances and high edge quality. Many Muratec turret presses also feature forming, tapping, and marking capabilities in one setup to reduce downstream processes and improve part flow.

Integrating Turret Presses in Modern Fabrication Lines

A turret press is most effective when it fits into a larger strategy of lean manufacturing and automated workflows. Muratec USA designs every turret press with integration in mind, making it easy to connect machines to material handling systems and the flexibility of integration with customers’ existing systems.

Whether you’re running a small job shop or managing a multi-line facility, Muratec turret presses are built to evolve with your operation.

End-to-End Sheet Metal Solutions

Muratec USA’s strength lies not just in our turret presses, but in the complete ecosystem of equipment we offer to support every phase of sheet metal fabrication. Our customers benefit from single-source solutions that streamline operations and eliminate the headaches of integrating equipment from multiple vendors.

Here’s what a fully integrated Muratec fabrication line can look like:

MF30510 Punch-Laser Combination Machine

At the heart of our multitasking lineup, the MF30510 combines turret punching with high-speed fiber laser cutting, allowing punching, forming, tapping, and laser contouring on a single machine. It’s ideal for fabricators producing a mix of complex and standard parts, and it eliminates the need for costly secondary processing.

Muratec USA Regional Sales Manager Steven Goldboss, right, talks about the MF30510 with manufacturing advocate Tony Gunn at Fabtech 2024.

By combining traditional turret punch technology with high-speed fiber laser cutting, the MF30510 gives fabricators the flexibility to handle a wide variety of part designs, materials, and operations in a single setup.

This multitasking machine has powerful advantages:

  • Punching, forming, tapping, marking, and laser cutting without moving the sheet between machines
  • Laser cutting for complex contours or fine features that punching alone can’t achieve
  • Reduced part handling and setup time, leading to higher productivity
  • Improved edge quality on laser-cut components

For fabricators with high-mix, low-volume workflows or intricate part geometries, the MF30510 eliminates the need to transfer parts from a turret punch to a laser or secondary operation, saving significant time and floor space.

The MF30510, a 33-ton, 5’x 10’ turret punch, has been a proven design for years and is engineered for long-term dependability and seamless automation. It’s compatible with Muratec’s sheet loaders, unloaders, and tower systems, allowing you to design a flexible, scalable production cell tailored to your volume.

Plus, the MF30510’s servo-driven punching head and laser module are both supported by Muratec USA’s expert engineering, training, and support teams. Muratec USA’s service, applications, and parts are located in Charlotte, NC, with no service contract or fees for remote support required, ensuring your shop gets the most out of every investment.

M2048TS and M3058TG Servo Turret Punch Presses

These all-electric, servo-driven turret presses are built for high-speed punching and forming with exceptional energy efficiency. The M2048TS offers a 44-114 style/46-spring/54-114 style station turret with fast tool changes and multi-tool configurations, while the larger M3048TG is perfect for oversized sheets and demanding part volumes. Both models are automation-ready and compatible with Muratec USA’s full suite of material handling systems.

Goldboss also pointed to Muratec’s smallest and largest turret presses as options for sheet metal fabricators.

“The servo driven 2044TC and hydraulic M5000 are unique to the market,” Goldboss said.  M2044TC is a small, entry-level machine for small footprint requirements or customers new to turret punches or just coming back to them. The M5000 is the only true turret punch available on the market offering 50 tons of hydraulic punching force, and also available with a plasma head attachment.  Both machines utilize 114-style tooling.”

FS Series Load/Unload Systems

Muratec’s FS Series systems, such as the FS2512 or FS3015, automate the loading of raw sheet material and the unloading of finished parts.

Fabrication automation, such as the Muratec 2512, streamline operations through front-end loading and unloading of raw materials and finished products.

The FS Series works seamlessly with Muratec turret presses and combination machines to significantly reduce manual labor, prevent damage to parts, and keep machines running with minimal interruption.

  • The FS2512 is ideal for 4′ x 8′ sheet sizes and fits compactly into most fabrication environments.
  • The FS3015 handles larger sheets and integrates easily with our higher-capacity punch and punch-laser models.
  • 4-stack capability to maximize automated throughput
  • Smallest footprint, entry-level automated system offered

The Future of Turret Press Automation

As the manufacturing landscape continues to evolve, turret press automation is entering a new era, defined not just by speed and precision but also by data integration, system intelligence, and flexible, lights-out operation.

“In the future, turret presses will always have a place in precision sheet metal processes due to low cost and unique capabilities,” Goldboss said. “Muratec fabrication specializes in turret punch technology and has for years. We continue to strive to make this machine the best version possible, working closely with our factory in Japan to connect with the U.S. market.”

As technology continues to evolve, turret presses will be central nodes in a connected, autonomous manufacturing environment, using real-time data analytics to optimize part flow, schedule preventative maintenance, and minimize material waste. Turret presses will increasingly be able to self-monitor and adjust based on live production feedback, making fabrication lines more responsive to last-minute order changes and custom part demands.

Automation will also become more modular and adaptive. Instead of custom integrations that require weeks of downtime, the next generation of turret presses will be plug-and-play compatible with various loaders, sorters, stackers, and diverse control systems. Fabricators will be able to build out automation in phases, scaling up as their production needs grow while maintaining seamless operation.

Muratec is already investing in these technologies, designing turret press platforms that are ready for smart factory integration, with open architecture, robust remote monitoring, and the ability to operate autonomously across multiple shifts.

The future isn’t just faster. It’s smarter, more connected, and more resilient. And turret presses, long the workhorses of sheet metal fabrication, are evolving into high-tech cells that will keep manufacturers competitive in the years to come.
